Configurations of the PKE contain countermeasures against Fault Injection Attacks (FIA). These attacks attempt to learn information about a private key being operated on by introducing a transient or long-lasting fault in the circuit’s operation. Faults may be caused by a variety of means: over- or under-clocking, temperature, or voltage outside of the operating specification, laser or electromagnetic pulses, physical modification of the circuit, etc. The PKE does not make any attempt to recover from faults, whether environmental or adversarially induced. Instead, it attempts to detect these faults and halt operation by raising a panic signal.
