Elliptic Curve Cryptography (ECC) Authentication

Elliptic Curve Cryptography (ECC) is an authentication scheme that leverages the mathematical properties of elliptic curves to generate an asymmetrical private and public key pair. Texas Instruments' BQ27Z855 battery fuel gauge supports ECDSA P-256 gauge authentication for anti-counterfeit protection of battery packs.

Gauge Authentication (ECDSA P-256)

The authentication method implements ECDSA (Elliptic Curve Digital Signature Algorithm) with the P-256 curve (also known as secp256r1 or prime256v1), utilizing SHA-256 hashing. This authentication scheme provides robust anti-counterfeit protection for battery packs.

Key Specifications:

  • Algorithm: ECDSA with P-256 curve
  • Private Key Size: 32 bytes
  • Public Key Size: 33 bytes compressed (first byte is standard point compression prefix 02 or 03, followed by 32-byte X coordinate, MSB-first)
  • Signature Size: 64 bytes (R 32 bytes || S 32 bytes), MSB-first
  • Hash: SHA-256 of the challenge input
  • Interface: I2C BlockData protocol via MAC commands (BlockDataCmd 0x3E, BlockData 0x40, checksum 0x60, length 0x61)
