Compensation Components

Choose compensation components for a stable control loop using the following procedure.

  1. Set the crossover frequency between 10% and 20% of the switching frequency. With fC specified as 60kHz in this example, and assuming an effective output capacitance of 56μF (two 47µF, 10V ceramic capacitors derated for an applied voltage of 5VDC) and negligible ESR, use Equation 49 to calculate RCOMP. Choose a standard value for RCOMP of 8.66kΩ.
    Equation 36. R C O M P = 2 π × f C × V O U T V R E F × C O U T g m × G =   2 π × 60 k H z × 5 V 0.8 V × 56 μ F 1 m S × 14.6 A / V = 9.04 k

    where

    • G = 14.6A/V, 10.9A/V and 8.1A/V for the LM65680, LM65660 and LM65640, respectively, is a factor related to the internal currrent-sense gain.
  2. Calculate CCOMP to create a zero at the higher of (1) one tenth of the crossover frequency, or (2) the load pole. Choose a standard value for CCOMP of 3.3nF.

    Equation 37. C C O M P = 10 2 π × f C × R C O M P =   10 2 × π × 60 k H z × 8.66 k = 3.1 n F

In general, set the time constant of RCOMP and CCOMP at approximately 25μs to maintain a fast settling time of the output voltage following a load transient.

  3. Calculate CHF to create a pole at the lower of the ESR zero frequency or at half switching frequency (to attenuate high-frequency noise coupling from the output to COMP). CBW is the parasitic capacitance of the error amplifier at COMP. Select a standard value for CHF of 47pF.

    Equation 38. C H F = 1 2 π × F S W 2 × R C O M P - C B W = 1 2 π × 400 k H z 2 × 8.66 k Ω - 40 p F = 51 p F

As an alternative, use internal compensation by connecting CNFG/SYNCOUT to VCC. Leave COMP open circuit or connected to PGND.

Note:

With external compensation, set a fast loop with high RCOMP and low CCOMP values to improve the response when recovering from operation in dropout (when the input voltage is less than the output voltage setpoint and the COMP voltage rails high).
