An on-board charger (OBC) is used in an electric vehicle (EV) or hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) to charge the traction battery from 48V to 800V. Functions of an OBC include:
Converting the grid 50/60Hz to DC
Adjusting the DC voltage to the levels required by the battery
Providing galvanic isolation
Power factor correction (PFC)
Motor control to prevent damage by arcs caused by hot unplugging
Wireless chargers are gaining significant traction in the automotive industry, and are expected to have at least 95 percent efficiency of wired charger electronics. Alignment of both transmission and receiver coils play a significant role in improving the chargers efficiency and performance.
